Our Guide to a Laser Micro-Peel, Preparing for It and What to Expect

Updated: Jun 24, 2023

Laser Micro-Peel

Brightening your skin and restoring its luminosity seems like a neverending journey, especially when you get the occasional zit that appears to throw a wrench in your skincare routine. Luckily, getting a Laser Micro-Peel treatment is a great way to address the many skin issues you may be struggling with, helping you feel more confident in your skin.

The treatment uses a special laser that removes a thin layer of damaged skin, improving its overall texture and allowing brighter, smoother skin tissue to surface. It offers excellent results since the aesthetician can administer it with great precision, allowing you to enjoy a customised treatment. It can be used to treat mild wrinkles, scars, sun damage, pigment irregularities, and keratosis on your face, neck, chest, and hands. Here’s what you need to know about Laser Micro-Peels:

How Does a Laser Micro-Peel Treatment Work?

The Laser Micro-Peel’s laser will scan over the treatment area to vaporise a thin layer of skin to a precise degree, eliminating damaged tissue. It then reveals the softer, smoother, and fresher skin underneath while stimulating your body’s healing mechanism, encouraging new cells to grow and resurface. You’ll end up with vibrant, healthy skin that is more evenly-toned and with fewer wrinkles.

How Many Treatments Are Necessary?

Laser Micro-Peel is so effective that you can enjoy your desired results in just one treatment. However, it ultimately depends on how your skin responds and what you want your skin to look like, so it’s best to first consult with a medical aesthetician. If you wish to reduce wrinkles or pursue acne treatment, they will personalise a plan to meet your needs and achieve all your targets.

What Happens During the Treatment?

During the procedure, the aesthetician or their assistants will clean the treatment area and furnish you with safety shields to protect your eyes from the laser. The aesthetician will then position the laser handpiece above the treatment area and hold it firmly in place while the scanner directs the laser beam in the targeted sites. The procedure typically lasts around 30 minutes, although it can be longer or shorter depending on the size of the treatment area. It also causes little pain since it does not penetrate deep into the skin, which means you’ll have a comfortable treatment experience.

What Should I Do Before the Procedure?

Before you start your procedure, there are a few things you’ll need to do first. It is crucial to consult the aesthetician first for specific instructions you should follow tailored to your unique situation, such as certain medicines to avoid.

Four weeks before getting your laser treatments, stay away from prolonged sun exposure, like getting a suntan or a sunburn. Laser treatment of tanned skin will increase the risk of permanent skin discolouration or blistering, which can be incredibly painful. You’ll also want to avoid self-tanning lotions.

What Should I Expect After the Procedure?

There are a few things you must expect after the procedure. You’ll need to use Vaseline or Aquafor three days after the treatment to soothe the treated area, which must stay soft while healing. The treated area may be red and warm, and you may feel a sunburn-like sensation in the area. Any discomfort and redness you experience is normal and will last two to eight hours after the procedure. You can relieve the tenderness with cool compresses for ten to twenty minutes at a time.

The day after the procedure, you may feel a tightness in your skin and some itchiness. Your skin may also start to flake or peel a few days after treatment. As much as possible, never pick on your skin. Instead, allow them to occur and fall over seven to ten days. Take quick cool showers for the first three days and avoid aerobic exercises, hot tubs, and saunas in the meantime. You can start using makeup on the third day after the procedure, but it’s best to exercise caution. Additionally, avoid prolonged sun exposure for four weeks after the procedure and wear sunscreen, even when you’re indoors. You can return to work within the next day since that’s when most of the redness subsides.
