How to Correctly Time Your Laser Hair Removal Treatments

If you regularly get laser hair removal, you’ve probably come up with a schedule of when your next appointment should be. But there are chances that you’re getting laser hair removal too often or too few.

There are numerous myths surrounding laser hair removal, such as how often you should get treatment to keep hair from growing and maintain silky-smooth skin. Timing your treatments is actually a significant factor in maintaining these silky results.

The key to understanding how to schedule your laser hair removal is to understand the hair growth cycle.

3 Stages of Hair Growth Cycle

There are three main stages to hair growth. This is crucial information for laser hair removal since this treatment can only be fully effective when performed at a particular stage of hair growth.

1. Anagen or the Growth Phase

Anagen is the active growth phase of hair follicles when the cells in the hair roots divide rapidly. That means the hair is growing and extending to the hair shaft. During this phase, the hair follicles are the most receptive to laser light because they are still rich in melanin and keratin, or the protein in hair.

Lasers predominantly operate by targeting the melanin or the colour in the hair. The anagen phase of a hair follicle is genetically determined, which varies from person to person. About 85 per cent of hair follicles in the body are in the anagen phase at any given time.

2. Catagen or the Transition Phase

After the anagen phase, the follicle enters the catagen phase, which is when the hair stops growing. This phase only generally lasts for two to three weeks and about five per cent of our hair is in this phase at any given time.

3. Telogen or the Resting Phase

The telogen phase is the final stage of the hair growth phase, and this is both resting and shedding. Once the hair begins to shed, the follicle begins to start a new cycle.

This stage typically lasts about a hundred days, which is the period of time needed for healthy follicles on the scalp to finish it. However, it can vary for different areas of the body. Still, nearly 10 per cent of hair follicles are in the telogen phase at any given time.

So, How Can You Time Your Laser Hair Removal?

Since about 85 per cent of hair follicles are in the anagen phase at any given time, that makes it the most effective time to perform laser hair removal. It’s important to cycle your laser hair removal every four to six weeks to ensure that all hair follicles are treated over your treatment series.

So, to get the maximum effect of your laser hair removal treatments, book a set package of six to 12 treatments and schedule your dates out in advance. That allows you to be sure that you’re on top of your treatments with the best possible results.

It’s also worth noting that the time between treatments may depend from person to person as it may differ based on your skin and hair type. It’s recommended that you always follow the advice given to you by your trained laser technician.
